Jewelry care — a Luna Ilum ring on a soft polishing cloth

Natural stones and precious metals are durable, but they are not indestructible. A few simple habits will keep your Luna Ilum pieces in excellent condition for years.

General Rules

Remove your jewelry before swimming, bathing, or using hot tubs. Chlorine and salt water accelerate tarnish on metals and can damage softer stones over time. Remove pieces before applying perfume, lotion, hairspray, or cleaning products. The chemicals in these products interact poorly with both stone and metal surfaces. Remove pieces before vigorous physical activity. Impact, friction, and sweat are all harder on jewelry than most people expect.

Stone Care

Natural stones vary in hardness and porosity. As a general rule, avoid exposing any stone to ultrasonic cleaners unless you have confirmed with a jeweler that your specific stone type is safe for that method. Many stones, including emerald, opal, and pearl, should never go near an ultrasonic cleaner.

For cleaning, a soft cloth lightly dampened with plain water is appropriate for most stones. For stubborn residue, a very mild soap solution applied with a soft brush, followed by a thorough rinse and immediate drying, is usually sufficient. Dry stones completely before storing.

Metal Care

Sterling silver tarnishes naturally through contact with air and skin. This is not damage. It is a natural process that can be reversed with a soft polishing cloth designed for silver. Do not use abrasive cloths or commercial silver dips on pieces with stones, as these can damage stone surfaces and settings.

Gold-plated or vermeil surfaces should be cleaned gently and polished minimally, as repeated polishing removes plating over time.

Storage

Store pieces individually. Stones and metals scratch each other when stored together. Small fabric pouches or individual compartments in a jewelry box prevent contact damage. Keep silver pieces in airtight pouches when not in regular use to slow tarnishing.

Keep all pieces away from direct sunlight and sources of heat for extended periods. Some stones, particularly those with high water content or organic components, are sensitive to temperature and UV exposure over time.
