Provenance

Rough and finished gemstones — Luna Ilum provenance

The word comes from the French, meaning origin, source, the place a thing comes from. In the art world, provenance is a legal and ethical matter. In jewelry, it is often treated as optional. We treat it as the foundation.

The Tokyo Gem Trade

Japan's relationship with precious stones is long and particular. The country imports significant volumes of gemstones from mining regions across the world, and over generations has developed a market culture, especially in Tokyo, where handling standards are unusually high. At the wholesale and atelier level, stones change hands with documentation, with spoken history, with the kind of attention that only accumulates in a trade where reputation is the primary currency.

We operate in this environment. Our sourcing is done through direct attendance at Tokyo's gem markets and through relationships with a small number of Japanese trading houses. These are not anonymous bulk purchases. They are transactions in which the stone's origin, often down to the mine or producing region, is part of the conversation.

Selection Criteria

We apply three filters to every stone we consider bringing into the catalog.

The first is optical quality. Color saturation, clarity, and the particular quality of light the stone holds. A stone that does not reward extended looking does not meet this threshold, regardless of its market grade.

The second is provenance verifiability. We do not carry stones whose origin we cannot speak to with reasonable confidence. This excludes a significant portion of available inventory, including many stones that would otherwise meet optical quality standards.

The third is proportional value. The stone must represent genuine value at the price we are able to offer it. We do not carry stones that are priced beyond what their quality and provenance honestly warrant.

What Reaches You

When a piece from Luna Ilum arrives, what you are holding is a stone that was chosen by hand from a Tokyo market, set by a Japanese artisan, and shipped to you without passing through an importer's warehouse or a boutique's display case. The provenance is as short as we can make it and as documented as the trade allows.

We believe this matters, not just as a market claim but as a way of being in the world. A stone with a known origin is more itself than one without. We are trying to sell things that are fully what they are.
